Module introduction

By the end of this module, we hope you will:

 

  • be familiar with the different forms of supported accommodation

 

  • understand the development of supported accommodation since deinstitutionalisation and the currently favoured models

 

  • understand the way government policy has shaped the provision of supported accommodation and how current policy is likely to alter provision

 

  • know the purpose of the 24-hour nursed care unit and how such units can work to promote the independence, recovery and rehabilitation of service users

 

  • be familiar with the evidence base for supported accommodation and what is known about the effectiveness of different models

 

  • know what is required in an assessment of need for accommodation and how this will ideally relate to a spectrum of different forms of supported accommodation in any locality

 

  • consider the impact of political and economic processes on the provision of supported accommodation for people with mental health problems in UK.
