Module introduction

By the end of this module, we hope you will be able to:

 

  • determine the roles and responsibilities of general adult psychiatrists in relation to safeguarding children,

 

  • describe a range of clinical scenarios where factors relating to the patient and their circumstances are likely to pose a risk to/impact on the welfare and safety of children in their environment,

 

  • recognise specific risks in relation to adult mental health and substance misuse,

 

  • understand the information governance issues that typically arise in this area of practice,

 

  • understand the risks associated with domestic violence, child sexual exploitation (CSE) and child criminal exploitation (CCE),

 

  • consider 'early help' as an option to assist parents and families to enable a team around the family approach and assess unmet need,

 

  • highlight the 'think family' agenda and its relevance to general adult psychiatric practice,

 

  • recognise the importance of seeking timely safeguarding supervision and advice from your organisation's safeguarding team.
