About the authors

Prasanna N. de Silva, MB, ChB, BMedBiol, MRCPsych

Specialist advisor to the Care Quality Commission (CQC).


Dr de Silva is a dual-trained consultant in adult and old age psychiatry. He acted as tutor at the Royal College of Psychiatrists for 8 years during his 18-year consultancy career, and now works part-time for the NHS as part of a portfolio job in addition to providing consultancy to the CQC.


His academic interests include CBT in psychosis, avoiding bias in clinical decision-making and child protection (all CPD Online modules). His main research interests are in GLUT transporters in schizophrenia and imaging in dementia, and his chief clinical interest is in the use of LEAN methodology in triaging referrals.

Michael Hobkirk, MBBS, MRCPsych, MSc, MMedEd, FHEA, MFMLM

Lead Consultant Psychiatrist for Chichester Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service; Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Leadership Tutor for Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.


Dr Hobkirk is a trainer for the Royal College of Psychiatrists, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has Masters degrees in Health Sciences (Health Services Management) and Medical Education from the University of Warwick. As a Fellow in Clinical Leadership at NHS West Midlands, he collaborated with national and regional GP leaders to foster GP-led innovation and commissioning, and supported the development of high quality and cost-effective outpatient and community services. As Specialist Advisor for Leadership Development at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, he authored key strategic publications.
