Do we learn effectively from each other? By Dr Arunima Ghosh-Nodiyal

Consultants often aim to be a ‘role model’ for their trainees, assuming that they will pass down their knowledge to them. Do trainees really learn in this way? If so, how? It is helpful to consider the ins and outs of the learning process.

The Social Learning Theory was proposed by Albert Bandura (1977). He was of the view that we learn by observation, imitation and modelling. This is similar to the ‘see one, do one’ principle that we are all familiar with. Bandura’s theory is considered to be a bridge between behaviourist and cognitive theories, as it involves attention, memory and motivation.

Are we aware of how these three elements can be influenced?

Distinctiveness, complexity and one’s own characteristics such as arousal and past reinforcement all affect attention. How do we retain information? Some do better by symbolic coding and mental images, while others may remember better by motor/symbolic rehearsal. For ‘motivation’ one has to have a good reason to imitate (i.e. there is a good enough role model); however, traditional behaviourism (what we’ve learnt in the past), what we hope for (imagined incentives) and vicarious outcomes (seeing and recalling the reinforced model) all help to increase one’s motivation.

The trick is perhaps to keep the learner’s attention, motivate them to be attentive, and perhaps help them with retention!
