Medical educationalists have always been keen to understand how adults learn and how to engage them in the learning experience. Indeed, the term andragogy was coined for this concept as far back as 1833, although it gained prominence following the work of Malcolm Knowles in the latter half of the 20th century.


Knowles identified six principles of adult learning:Engage


  •    adults are internally motivated to learn and are self-directed
  •    adults link life experiences and knowledge to learning
  •    adults are goal oriented
  •    adults are relevancy oriented
  •    adults are practical
  •    adult learners like to be respected.


So, how does this work in practice?


At CPD Online we address these principles by offering a range of modules, covering a breadth of topics for you to choose from, and which you can complete at your own convenience (promoting self-direction). Our modules are designed with different learning styles in mind, and they frequently utilise case studies to help illustrate their application (promoting internal motivation and practicality). We strive to keep the material updated and relevant to your practice (promoting relevancy). We encourage our authors to set learning objectives and allow you to assess your performance against these (promoting goal setting). In addition, our modules regularly make use of reflective tasks and provide opportunities for further reading and research (promoting self-direction and allowing learners to utilise their own experience while learning). Finally, we are keen to work with you to continue to improve the quality of our resources (promoting respect).

An introduction to motivational interviewing

  Introduction to motivational interviewing
Understand the principals and techniques of motivational interviewing, a patient-centred and gently directive interaction style used to negotiate behaviour change. Motivational interviewing has been applied to conditions including obsessive-compulsive disorders, eating disorders, anxiety, and dual diagnosis.
Nidotherapy   Introduction to nidotherapy: a video-based module
Nidotherapy uses a collaborative approach to modify the environment to minimise the impact of a mental disorder on the individual or society. It is particularly useful for disorders that are especially difficult to treat, for instance personality disorder. Be guided through the therapy by Professor Peter Tyrer, the originator of and leading authority on nidotherapy.

Module: Quickbite: Personal development plans: how to make them work 

Quickbite modules are a great way to get some CPD under your belt when time is limited, and this is an excellent place to start. There are three short sections: "What is a personal development plan? ", "How to construct your PDP", and "The rules of CPD". The text is crisply written and there are some helpful interactive exercises which make the subject matter fun to engage with. Once you have completed the module you will be up-to-date with the latest College CPD framework, have half an hour (half a point) of CPD completed, and be ready to get to grips with the rest of CPD Online, as you will have found out that College members may use CPD Online for up to 25 CPD points annually (in the UK).

ModuleQuickbite: Asking for a psychodynamic psychotherapy opinion in general psychiatry

To complete another half point of CPD, here is another excellent Quickbite. Dr Jon Patrick outlines the basics of psychodynamic psychotherapy and has structured the module so as to help psychiatrists not only refer patients for this treatment, including a well-written model referral letter, but also advise a patient about their referral, which is demonstrated as we eavesdrop on a therapeutic conversation. There are useful opportunities for reflection appropriately placed in the module and I was particularly impressed by the way that the author has combined the provision of knowledge with the development of skills in the learner, all in a digestible bite-size package.
